THE FIFTEEN-FOOT ERA by Gerard Dumas The fifteen-foot barrier (4.57,2m) remains the most prestigious imperial-measure stepping stone that vaulters have had to reach. Between 1936 and 1940, American vaulters dominated the event. Height measurements in the U.S., of course, were in feet and inches. During this period, 23 U.S. vaulters exchanged rankings in the world top-10 lists, while only three foreign athletes were included, none higher than sixth place. All of this contributed to the importance of the first 15-foot clearance. As early as 1934, U.S. vaulter Bud Deacon had attempted the height in competition. During the 1937 season, his compatriots Earle Meadows and Bill Sefton came very close indeed to clearing the magical barrier. After having broken the world record several times, jointly and separately, the "heavenly twins," as they were called in those days, managed 14'11" on May 29, 1937. The goal was in sight. They should have been the first ones to reach it. They never did, as their performances regressed during the 1938 and 1939 seasons. Then came a period of time in our specialty that could only be called the Warmerdam Era. This young Californian, who had steadily come up the ranks, flew over a bar placed at exactly fifteen feet on April 13, 1940. One would think that the "magic" had been definitively broken. It had, but only for one man. It took nearly ten years to see another vaulter clear that height, and this was made using a metal pole, while Warmerdam had accomplished his feat on bamboo. During that period, Cornelius ("Dutch") Warmerdam reached fifteen feet or higher 43 times and usually everyone else was a foot below his marks. His dominance was total, and he even reached the seemingly impossible 15'8 1/2" in an indoor meet. Only World War II deprived Warmerdam of a probable two Olympic titles, and one can only wonder what he might have vaulted, given opportunity of jumping as frequently as do the vaulters of today. Started in the bamboo period, the list below stretches into the metal era and includes the first fiberglass users. After his career ended in WWII navy service, it was seven years before the second "15-foot Era" began. This period was dominated by Bob Richards, who bettered the 15' mark 124 times. Richards, however, never was able to improve on Warmerdam's world record of 15' 7 3/4", recording a best outdoor mark of 15'5". That remained for Bob Gutowski to accomplish on 27 April 1957, with a leap of 18'8 1/4". Gutkowski improved that to 15'9 3/4" six weeks later.
