Steven is one of the most unique high hurdlers to come through C. E. King High School. He only stands 5 feet 8 inches tall. Most high hurdlers stand from 5-10 to 6-5. That's what mainly makes Steven different from other high hurdlers. Being shorter than his opponents, he has to have great form over the hurdle, and great speed between the hurdles, and Steven has that. Steven started off as a sprinter in the 7th grade back in 1995 at C. E. King middle school. But his coach Jim Murillo persuaded him to try the hurdles. Every since then he has been a hurdler, and a pretty good one too. Being shorter, he has an advantage of getting off the hurdle faster than his taller opponents. His lead leg will hit the ground faster, because he's shorter. Steven's speed also helps. Steven had a breakout season in his Junior year(1999) at C. E. King high school, but not just in track. He had a pretty good football season as well. He played wide receiver for C. E. King's football team. C.E. King is mainly a running program on offense, they hardly ever pass the ball, but Steven still excelled at wide receiver recording, 4 receptions for 90 yds. (22.5 yds per rec.) and 3 TD's, with a long of 60 yds. versus Pearland high school. In his previous sophomore season (1998) he also excelled at cornerback recording 2 interceptions, one against Houston Smiley high school, and one against Houston Forest Brook high school in the closing seconds of the 4th quarter. In his Junior track season (2000) Steven ran 3rd leg on C. E. King's 4x400 meter relay that finished third at district, behind Houston Smiley, and the class 4A state champion Houston Forest Brook 4x400 meter relay team of,(Shamus Lewis, Ivory McCann, Adrian Mayes, and Willie Hodge). In Steven's Senior track season (2001), he won two track meets in the 110-meter hurdles, at the War Eagle Relays 2/23/2001, and the Dayton Bronco Relays 3/9/2001, closing his good track career at C.E. King high school. Steven also ranks third on C. E. King's all-time boys' 110-meter hurdles list behind state champion hurdler Gerard Whittaker 13.49 seconds, and Dennis Hickman 14.50 seconds, with Steven ranking third at 14.79 seconds.
