Dominated women's pole vault for five years 1994-99. As a schoolgirl she was a trapeeze artist in the Flying Fruit Flies Circus for four years. Set first of 12 outdoor world records with 4.25m in November 95, the last was in February 99 at Sydney with 4.60m. Finished sixth in 99 world indoor championships after a hamstring injury. Best jump in 2000 at Perth in Feb 4.50m. Currently ranked fourth in the world. Hobbies: Fishing, camping, swimming and flying. Major injuries : - Hamstring injury in 1999 restricted her attempt to win the 1999 World Indoor Championships. - She crashed and hurt her back in a training accident three weeks before the World Championships in Seville, 1999. Superstitions : - Emma wears a pair of good-luck pearl earrings and paints her nails with a special bottle of nail-polish before competing. Why this sport : - GEORGE started vaulting in 1994 when she was at Deakin University. Originally, she was a long jumper and sprinter, but she started vaulting after a coach suggested it would suit her strengths - speed, jumping ability and comfort in the air. - She started after Mark STEWART who became her first pole vault coach, placed a notice on her local club room window. She won the Australian title in 1995 with what was then seen as a promising vault of 3.40m. Most admired person : - Melinda GAINSFORD-TAYLOR. - She used to admire Carl LEWIS because he was so good at so many events. Now it's BUBKA, the pole vault world record holder. Major awards: - GEORGE was the first woman to break the 15-foot barrier and she shared the world record of 15'1 with American Stacy DRAGILA until May 2000 when DRAGILA upped the mark to 15'1.75. Commonwealth and Australian Record - 4.60m General interests : - Former sprint and long jump champion. - As a youngster GEORGE was an acrobat in the Australian Fruit Fly circus troupe performing on the trapeze and doing handstands on piles of chairs as high as 20 feet in the air. At age 13 she stopped performing in the circus. She says, though, that the experience helps her pole vaulting because she has a good feel for her positioning at all times. - An unfinished portrait of GEORGE painted by 11-year-old artist Alan SHARP was chosen by Sydney Olympic organisers who have used the colourful and vivid painting of GEORGE on such merchandise as pins, placemats, coasters, magnets, key rings, and postcards. On Pole Vaulting : - Vaulting is a sport you really have to work at because it's quite technical and it doesn't come naturally. You have to learn everything. Every time I clear the bar the feeling is amazing. - She managed only one successful jump out of six attempts at the Seville World Championships. - Her favourite food is chocolate and Italian and her favourite band is Crowded House. from http://www.tilastopaja.net/ Progression: Pole vault 1996 4.45 1 Sapporo 14 Jul Pole vault 1997 4.55 1 Nike Melbourne 20 Feb Pole vault 1998 4.59 1 Optus Brisbane 21 Mar Pole vault 1999 4.60 AR PB 1 Optus Sydney 20 Feb Pole vault 2000 4.50 1 Bankwest Perth 5 Feb in 2000: Pole vault 4.40 1 Perth 16 Jan Pole vault 4.45 1 Perth 30 Jan Pole vault 4.50 SB 1 Bankwest Perth 5 Feb Pole vault 4.45 2 Optus Brisbane 11 Feb Pole vault 4.15 3 Optus Sydney 13 Feb Pole vault 4.40 1 Perth 20 Feb Pole vault 3.75 q NC Sydney 24 Feb Pole vault 4.40 1 NC Sydney 26 Feb Pole vault 4.45 1 Optus Melbourne 2 Mar Pole vault 4.40 1 Optus Adelaide 8 Mar Pole vault 4.40 1 Live Nrnberg 25 Jun Pole vault 4.40 5 Tsiklitiria Athna 28 Jun Pole vault 4.10 6 Nikaa Nice 8 Jul Pole vault 4.31 1 Barcelona 25 Jul Pole vault 4.35 6 DNG Stockholm 1 Aug Pole vault 4.16 5 MAI Malm 7 Aug Pole vault 4.40 1 OT Sydney 19 Aug Pole vault 4.35 1 Brisbane 8 Sep Pole vault 4.15 2 Gold Coast 10 Sep in Major Championships: Pole vault 1997 4.00 q WUG Catania 27 Aug Pole vault 1997 4.40 1 WUG Catania 29 Aug Pole vault 1998 4.30 2 GWG Uniondale NY 19 Jul Pole vault 1998 4.20 1 CWG Kuala Lumpur 19 Sep Pole vault 1999 4.15 14= WC Sevilla 21 Aug ------------------------------ Australia : Tatiana Grigorieva ------------------------------ from http://www.olympics.com/ Date of birth : 8 Oct 1975 Gender : Female Height : 178 cm / 5'10" Weight : 65 kgs / 143 lbs Birth place : St. Petersburg (Russian Federation) Residence : Adelaide - South Australia (Australia) Marital status : Married Children : None SPORTING PROFILE Personal bests : 4.50m 14'09.00" Season best : 4.30m 14'01.25" Coach : Aleksandr PARNOV Major achievements: - 3rd 4.45m 1999 World Championships - Seville, Spain - 2nd 4.35m 2000 Goodwill Games - New York, United States of America - 8th Women's 800m 2:05.55 1995 World Championships - Gothenburg, Sweden Highlights : - The Russian born vaulter won her first major championship medal at the 1999 World Championships in Seville. Luckilly the British Athletic Association has picked up the slack : Name Janine Whitlock Sex Female Born 11/08/1973 (Dewsbury) Height 1.63m Weight 54kg Event Pole Vault Club Trafford AC Coach Tony Whitlock & Alan Jubb Janine has set 31 British pole vault records from 1996 to 2000, 15 outdoors (3.91 to 4.35) and 15 indoors (3.87 to 4.31). Her personal bests demonstrate her all-round athleticism, and her speed was illustrated by her 2nd in the 1999 AAA indoor 60m and outdoor bests of 11.56 for 100m when 2nd in the Jubilee Cup Final and 23.30 for 200m when 5th at the AAAs, before a 200m win in the B international v France. She became the first British woman to vault 4 metres in 1996, and made her UK international debut at the 1997 World Indoors. Janine pole vaulted in ten indoor meets in 1999, including a British record 4.29 for 5th at the Birmingham Grand Prix and 4.20 at the World Indoors in Maebashi. She has had a few technical problems outdoors, but steadily improved, to two competitions at 4.25, but sadly just short of World Championships qualifying. 2000 Form Janine steadily improved during the indoor season, and after taking her fourth successive AAA Indoor title at 4.20, added a centimetre to her UK indoor record with 4.30 for third equal in Stuttgart on 6 February in her seventh competition of the year. After that she was 5th in Stockholm at 4.22 and 2nd at the CGU Grand Prix in 4.31, her 30th national record. She maintained top form with 4.30 in both qualifying and final (for 5th) at the European Indoors. She has also shown sparkling speed and improved her personal best for 60m from 7.41 (1999) to 7.40 and then 7.36 for 3rd at the AAAs. A niggling knee problem held her back on her outdoor start, with 3.90 at Eton on 6 May, but she improved to 4.10 for 2nd in the Osaka GP on 13 May, before refinding her best form and improving the British record to 4.35 in Prague on 5 June. She won the Bedford International Games at 4.15, cleared 4.14 indoors in Birmingham, 4.20 in Athens and 4.10 at the European Cup. 1999 Form Janine pole vaulted in ten indoor meets this year, including a British record 4.29 for 5th at the Birmingham Grand Prix and earlier 4.13 for a short lived UK All-Comers record. She jumped 4.20 at the World Indoors in Maebashi. She has had a few technical problems outdoors, but steadily improved, to two competitions at 4.25, but sadly just short of World Championships qualifying. She has also shown fine sprinting form with a series of personal bests. She reduced her 60m best from 7.50 to 7.41 to take AAA indoor silver, and outdoors won the Yorkshire 100m title in 11.77 after a 11.70 heat, and later improved to 11.56 when 2nd in the Jubilee Cup Final. She set a personal best for 200m with 23.55 at the Inter-Counties and improved to 23.34 and 23.30 (5th) at the AAAs, before a win in the B international v France.
