The following are 20 selected responses to Vaultworld’s survey for Pole Vault Coaching tips:

1. Phil Gorrill 20:24:35 5/17/99 P/B 14’
pole as close to vertical as possible
arms extended and pushing through the pole.
strong drive leg.
Backwards c position

7. Brian Zaglauer 16:11:31 11/13/97 Coach and PV 17-1 1/4
Starting the plant two steps out. Not allowing your left hand to drop below your belly
button. Bringing strait up through your body, trying not to round house to much and not
planting the right hand to far behind the head.

11. Jennifer Infantino 10:03:10 11/11/97 9’
a great "C" position; high and dynamic plant

30. Geoff Fairbanks 12:33:56 10/02/97 PV
A great plant comes when you reach what I call a "C" position. A C position is when you
are driving through your power arm, bringing the knee up and trail leg cocked back

35. Soaring Sonia 00:45:52 9/07/97 13-4
When you hit the tip of the pole right smack in the corner of the box with your arms
raised full.

37 Courtney Keith 16:26:56 8/29/97 PV
Straight, solid arms and make sure your body is centered and squared.

40. Jen Sutyak 18:01:01 8/14/97
Having a Strong drive with your knee and making sure your plant is tall and straight.

42. Tim McMichael 06:51:20 7/31/97 PV & Coach 18-5
A great plant is one that transfers energy directly to the pole. The top hand should reach
its highest point, the pole should strike the back of the box and the heel of the take off
foot should leave the ground at the same instant.

62. Jeff (CAVEMAN) Culligan 17:05:34 6/03/97 PV 14’
After a great approach, a great plant comes from really reaching as high as possible directly
overhead just as the pole hits the box and you hit maximum velocity.

70. Scott Wenholz 02:17:58 5/30/97 PV 17’ 2 3/4”
Jumping up off the ground when the pole hits the back of the box, a full extention at take off and
leading with the chest, not letting the hips get in front of you.

116. Jeff Hess 18:42:21 3/25/97 Coach
High, early, directly over head and hips, aggressive drive through takeoff

121. CHAD COMEAU 22:40:09 3/16/97 Coach
PLANT IS DIRECTLY ABOVE HEAD AND D O NOT SLOW DOWN ON LAST STEPS TO
BOX. SHOULDERS ARE SQUARE TO BOX

124. Mike Fisher 16:04:57 3/14/97 Coach and PV
MAKE SURE YOUR STEPS ARE ON-REACH HIGH AND
PLANT AGGRESSIVELY VERY AGGRESSIVE!!!!!!

126. Jason Morcom 14:04:52 3/13/97 Coach and PV
Timed, Tall, Rigid, Explosive,
Your step must also be ON!

154. Mike Sullivan 01:28:20 8/27/96 PV 13’6”
A great plant starts with rythem, you should feel where and when the pole should be planted. The
top hand should pass right beside the ear and go straight up into the air. An early plant is better
than a late plant or you won't be able to get your arm straight and that will cause a breakdown in
form before you begin.

155. Greg Schroeder 01:24:27 8/27/96 PV 16-5
A great plant is only accomplished as a result of a great run. Most people think that straight arms
are the only sign of a good plant. In actuality, a great plant is made possible through great body
position. Your arms are an extension of your body. Throughout the plant, you not only want your
arms up, but you want your chest, and body up as well. If your hands are up while you are leaning
back or hunched over, you might run into some trouble, not to mention lower back problems.

165. Frank X. Krantz 00:41:26 8/27/96 Coach and PV
Bring your plant through early enough so your arms are fully extended overhead as takeoff step
touches the runway. Vaulter must then explode upward from the runway.

174. Shawn Devereaux 23:24:25 8/26/96 Coach
A good step - 3 to 6 inches out from plumb. Early, high, quick. Be aggressive off the ground,
driving through the pole.Don't roundhouse the pole up from your hip.

181. Mario Oliver 15:39:29 8/25/96 Coach and PV
A tall plant, both arms straight with a perfect
step. Body over the toe (no blocking), chest
forward.
