The single most important thing in the pole vault is the ammount of energy generated by the
approach speed and plant mechanics.
46. Rob Leonard 13:48:55 7/19/97 PV and Coach
Maximum velocity at take off. That coupled with a correct plant phase.

the rest is futile.
127. Coach Wild Bill Coady 09:56:51 3/13/97 Coach
I believe one of the most important area,
needs to be the working on speed down the
runway. Recruiting of Women, this year it is
a official 4A / 5A event.
134. Dave Kerin 15:42:30 12/07/96 Coach
Takeoff:Speed leading into, elevating off,
carring momentum from approach into
following phases

SPEED
174. Shawn Devereaux 23:24:25 8/26/96 Coach
The run. Many technical problems begin with an inconsistent run.
181. Mario Oliver 15:39:29 8/25/96 Coach and PV
Focusing on your best attribute and improving the rest. I was once told the secret to the vault is
an outside take off, and I believe it is, if as he said, there is one secret. More people have jumped
high with a great run and excellent top than any other way; however, the big frech style plant,
with the russian chest- through method is now producing the biggest bars. It is difficult to get on
the bug sticks when you're too far under. The vault as a whole, however, is the most important. It
is one of two (TJ being the other) field events in which you can apply force and directly affect the
outcome of the event once the trial is underway.
182. Bubba Sparks AKA Doug Sparks 15:33:37 8/25/96 Coach and PV
Once again, pole speed! Three components are involved. Velocity of run combined with a
balanced pole drop. Pushing the left hand higher than the right will make the right hand invisible
for the purpose of physics thus lowering your grip 1' 6". See Doug Sparks. GET THE POLE
PAST VERTICAL! If you throw a baseball or hit a tennis ball or a golf ball, maximum velocity
is past vertical. In the pole vault, you must store energy. It is like a bank account, if you want to
get something out at the top, you had better put it in on the bottom. Keeping the pole in front as
once your hips pass the pole you will only rise with reserve speed (flag). I have hundreds of
vaults on tape that show Pat Manson, Dean Starkey, Tim Bright, etc., with their poles past
vertical and their ENTIRE body on the runway side of the pole. Quinon's 1984 Olympic winning
vault shows incredible forward speed coming to nearly a complete stop before being converted
upwards as the pole went past ! vertical.
