Work hard. Start with a short run and gradually work your way back to a long run two strides at a
time. Start with an 8 or 10 step run and then go to 12, 14, 16, and if you are stong enough 18 and
20. Your run is too long when you can't stay tall and accellerate through the box. Be patient. If
you improve an inch a week for a whole year you are doing great.
46. Rob Leonard 13:48:55 7/19/97 PV and Coach
Enjoy yourself with active rest, but don't get injured playing silly sports!

1. Gymnastics
2. General athletics, weights
58. Karl Koonce 10:17:16 6/10/97 Coach
Work on speed, speed, speed, and strength. Work on speed drills, and a good weight program are
essentially. This is a good time to work on little technical problems with your vault. Work hard to
change old bad habits and make it an automatic thing. We also try to do a lot fun drills.

157. Duane Brodt, director Hoosier PV Camp 01:11:29 8/27/96 Coach and PV
Never let up. If you're going to be a VAULTER, then you're a vaulter during the so-called "off
and preseason." Still train specifically with the right goals.
159. Howard L. Roberson 01:03:45 8/27/96 Coach
Weights for legs and upper body. Stretching
exercises to maintain flexibility. Speed work indoors, and pratice planting into towels or slide
boxes.
161. Geoff Steward 00:56:19 8/27/96 Coach and PV
Work the trunk strength in the weight room...chinnies, crunches, back extensions and plate twists
are all exercises I use with my vaulters to develop a strong midsection. Don't underestimate the
importance of exercises which have the athlete moving moderate amounts of wieght
quickly...jump squats, power cleans and snatch, done properly, can impact the vaulters power
into the plant tremendously. Finally, drills which emphasize good running mechanics (i.e. Mach
drills, drills presented by Loren Seagreave and Kevin O'Donnell as part of their speed dynamics
series).
162. Chris Diller 00:52:51 8/27/96 Coach and PV
Rest. Take time off during off season. Do something else that you enjoy. During the preseason
you had better practice a lot. Nothing will help you more
164. Tim Suto 00:46:01 8/27/96 Coach and PV
In the off season a valter should analyze his/her goals
The vaulter must like a wrestler achieve a stable weight
for their individual performance. Fluctuating weght could lead
to inconsistant vaulting. The vaulter needs to make themselves
a complete athlete. Vaulting requires strength in all major muscle groups
and precision. Speed is also a pressing concern
because speed produces all energy to achieve height
There is no off season. The season is only a performance
demonstrating all the work you have done
when no one but yourself and your coach
was paying attention
165. Frank X. Krantz 00:41:26 8/27/96 Coach and PV
Thoroughly strengthen the muscles of the shoulder girdle as well as the abdomen. Actually, all
muscle groups should be conditioned. Work on quickness and jumping ability in the legs,
specifically, the ability to convert quickness vertical jump.
171. DICK RAILSBACK 23:50:55 8/26/96 Coach
LOTS OF GYMNASTICS WORKING ON GENERAL GYMNASTICS ROUTINES ON THE
RINGS, HIGH BAR AND P-BARS; THEN VAULT RELATED EXERCISE ON THE SAME
APPARATUS AND FOLLOWED BY STRENGTH ROUTINES ON THE SAME
APPARATUS. 300M, 200M, 150M RHYTHM SPRINTS WORKING ON PROPER SPRINT
MECHANICS.
174. Shawn Devereaux 23:24:25 8/26/96 Coach
Middle distance 200-800m, often in preseason for stamina towards the end of the competitive
season.
Weights in the offseason and preseason never during the competition season.
Perfect your run early in the preseason away from the pit.
181. Mario Oliver 15:39:29 8/25/96 Coach and PV
Keep training. Vault, being the most technical
event has many drills that can be done,
Gymanstics, etc. Post season, tone it down
for a while the beginner needs to train all areas more so thatn the elite, but year round training is
a must to jump high. Pre season, do preseason work, but start vaulting early, esp. for the novice
and int. Distance vault from 3-4 strides, work your way back and up poles.
182. Bubba Sparks AKA Doug Sparks 15:33:37 8/25/96 Coach and PV
Bob Fraley, whom I consider a great leader in this event says in his book on jumps, which you all
should find, that once you know how to vault, greater heights will be primarily achieved through
increased speed and conditioning. AMEN!
