42. Tim McMichael 06:51:20 7/31/97 PV & Coach 18-5
My favorite drill is short run vaulting on very stiff poles. It forces you to be agressive at the
takeoff and helps with over all technique and timing.
46. Rob Leonard 13:48:55 7/19/97 PV and Coach
Pop ups.
Rhythm runs with a pole.

48. Paul Jorgensen 23:34:29 7/03/97 Coach
I like the C drill. The vaulter uses a 3 step approach, goes up and coach pushes the athlete in the
back for support.

working the plant into a heavy box and a light box in establishing the forward positions of the
chest and arms at the plant. Top hand needs to push forward at the plant to generate more power
at the plant and protect the top shoulder from being out of position that is common to
round-house type planting

We do one we call our scaffolding drills in which our kids push off the top of a surface about 12
feet highand practice swinging up on the pole to get inverted, falling into the pit in an inverted
position holding onto the pole(we use the big football tire sled used for running through and
move it up to the edge of
the pit).

161. Geoff Steward 00:56:19 8/27/96 Coach and PV
Springboard rope vaulting and rope plants to work on the plant to swing transition and high vault
horse plants to work on the active achievement of the C position.
162. Chris Diller 00:52:51 8/27/96 Coach and PV
Underwater vaulting. Going through the motions in a weightless environment helps a lot.
Plus it is a lot of fun for everyone. It breaks the routine of vaulting all the time
164. Tim Suto 00:46:01 8/27/96 Coach and PV
blind towel drills
pull ups
rope climbing
gymnastics
anything else which requires body control in a strength exercise
165. Frank X. Krantz 00:41:26 8/27/96 Coach and PV
Pop-ups are great for working your swing up. The training pole is great for teaching the vaulter to
bend the pole, as well as stay down until the pole is bent fully. I also like the sliding box to work
the approach, but I don't like to over do the sliding box because it seems that if I get too used to it
my vaulting approach suffers. The ropes also seem to be effective in working the swing up.
171. DICK RAILSBACK 23:50:55 8/26/96 Coach
POLE SPRINTS WORKING ON A GREAT APPROACH WITH COACH'S CHECK MARKS.
TAKEOFF DRILLS MOVING THE BODY UPWARD WITH THE POLE PLANT. TRAIN
LIKE A SPRINTER/LONG JUMPER.
174. Shawn Devereaux 23:24:25 8/26/96 Coach
rings. plyometrics.
But nothing takes the place of good vaulting practice.
181. Mario Oliver 15:39:29 8/25/96 Coach and PV
Rope Vault: low impact, fun!
Free-hip hands: great for timing +
Pulley: gives the vaulter the feel of the right
position esp. for beg. that never get there
Wall bars: strength and simulation.
I could go on and on, but those four, I wouldn't
want to do with-out, as coach or athlete.
182. Bubba Sparks AKA Doug Sparks 15:33:37 8/25/96 Coach and PV
I have a series that takes about 45 minutes that we use as a warmup. In my readings and
conversations with Sergei Bubka, and his then coach, Vitaly Petrov, we use a HUGE pole to do
all drills so that your body must adapt to the conditions and physics. Petrov told me in Reno at
the USATF PV Summit, that the Americans have such such enthusiasm but constantly disobey
the laws of physics. We treat our careers as an obligation (job) but NEVER disobey the laws of
physics.
