Pole weight rating

It is my understanding that the weight rating for a pole reflects the safe maximum weight for that pole when gripped at the top of the pole. I've heard that there is a sort of "rule of thumb" for computing how much more weight that a given pole will safely handle based on how far down from the top the grip is moved. Such as 6" down adds 5lbs. to the safe wieght. Has anyone heard of this before? Is there any truth to it? I'm a slow older guy wanting to start vaulting again, and there aren't any short poles for a 195-200 pounder. I don't expect to be doing any big bending, but I want to be able to get the most I can out of a pole. I'd appreciate any info.
